Silo Structure: The Ultimate Guide

By-Naman Agarwal

October 1, 2020

When you step you feet in the Blogging world, you started looking for the strategies to grow up. If you are in Blogging field then you also know about semantics and silos. If you don’t know what is Silo Structure then follow me up in this post.

You must be knowing Neil Patel. The owner and founder of Ubersuggest.

Neil Patel insists to implement the Silo Structure. But, on the other hand Rand Fishkin states “SEO can’t Operate well in a Silo anymore” in his interview

But here Neil Patel is right. You should implement Silo to your Blog/Website because it is working and will be working in the future too.

So, today I am gonna reveal the secret of Blogging experts who quickly rank there sites and gain High Authority in the eyes of Google. Obviously by doing SEO.

As there are various types of SEO that exist and you don’t know them. There is one SEO technique and that’s called “Silo Structure“.

Now let’s begin this interesting Topic.

What is Silo? or What is Siloing?

If you do google translate then Silo means :

si·lo – sīlō/ – verb.

Definition: To isolate (one system, process, department, etc.) from others.

If we are talking about Silo in Blogging then, Siloing is the process of gathering the related data or information and organizing them in your site.

Silo Structure has to made before launching the site and will be implemented after writing a good amount of articles in your website.

All the related data of the website will be grouped together or you can say that it should be linked together.

Well let’s me illustrate it with an simple site map.

Silo Structure
  • Save

Here the main niche means the main topic of your website. Like Gardening, Cooking, Fitness and etc.,.

Parent Page means your post which should be marked as the Pillar content. The most lengthiest post in your website in terms of relevancy on one topic that comes under your niche.

Subtopics means all the post that you have to write in context of the Silos or Pillar post.

Why we need to use Silo Structure?

SEO: This can be the biggest benefits of a silo structure. If you Implement silo structure in your niche site from the beginning it helps a lot in reducing the Google sandbox time, that your site undergoes for 3-4 months after its inception.

Search Engines are always lazy. They don’t want to crawl you website deeply.

Websites with unorganized structure make it difficult to understand what the site is about.

This can impact your crawl budget and overall rankings.

By “siloing” your website (creating content groupings and internal link structures) you can see drastically improve how search engine bots interact with your site.

Everyone knows that how much topic relevancy is important and plays a crucial role in SEO. That’s what Silo do.

It interlink all the content together and boost the relevancy of your content. If you are having the pages/post pertaining to one topic linked with each other then it gives a clear indexation to Google that your post is relevant and help your post to rank in SERPS.

Topic relevance is must. To understand this let’s take an example- If you are having a good niche website on Gardening and your all posts are ranking, suddenly you got interested in anything different from your niche and you wrote a well-detailed article on “Top 10 mobile phones in 2020”.

Now here you won’t get ranked in any condition because google ask a question itself like how a good Gardner can be a mobile specialist. So if you have written a detailed article and do all kind of on-page SEO there is less chance of your website as compared to a Mobile niche website to get ranked.

There is one benefit of implementing Silos is that your website’s Link Juice will be delivered to to whole website. Then you will be able to rank your post on any desired keyword.

Easy navigation: A well organised website allows their visitor to navigate easily on their website. They can find all the content in same niche on your website and navigate to each post easily. This increases the natural growth of the website.

No more left-out pages: If any blog post is not linked to by any of the other blog posts, it’ll be left out from indexing in Google SERPs.

Silo structure addresses this issue as the relevant posts under a silo page will be interlinked, and every post you create will be under a relevant silo page.

Only because of this Google Bot Crawls your site without any problem.

Making of Silo Structure

Remember that you have to craft the Silo Structure before making your website. So that it can be implemented easily.

I use a free cross-platform app called XMind to create the Mind map of my Silo Structure. I recommend you to make it by hand at first so that it will be easy and fast to make it on XMind.

Now we can see that as we have done the mind map for our website.

Implementation of Silo Structure on WordPress

Now, we are going to learn how we can implement the Silo Structure on our WordPress Website.

So, Read this carefully as we are going to learn how to implement Silo Structure in WordPress Website.

#1. How to Research Silo Topics

As there is the goal to find the various types of topics that comes under your niche. If you are having a Baby care niche then here are some sub-topics:

♦ Baby Lotions

♦ Baby Walkers

♦ Baby Comforts

Some of you got with that and some of my readers are still in confusion.

So here is another example for you. Like this time we choose an easy niche and that is “Shoes”.

Now here are the sub topics in Shoes:-

♦ Running Shoes

♦ Party wear Shoes

♦ Casual Shoes

♦ Sports Shoes

♦ Baby Shoes

♦ Workout shoes

Now depending upon the site you have, you can use different kind of tools and resources to make the process of Silo Structure making easier.

If you are an amazon affiliate you can use ali express menu to create and get lots of ideas for your Silo.

Like here are some examples for you from some of the popular authoritative sites in the market.

Free Sub topics ideas

As here in this picture you can see this is the menu of Ali Express. Here we can get a lot of ideas like if we are doing Men’s Clothing so in this niche we can add a lot of sub topics.

Some of them are:

♦ Bottoms

♦ Outerwear & Jackets

♦ Underwear & Loungewear

♦ Basic T-Shirts

♦ SweatPants

and many more….

Now let’s move to the next part of Creating Silo Structure for WordPress.

#2. How to get High Traffic Keywords

In this 2020 there are not a single niche which is not having traffic. So no matter what kind of niche you chooses, if your find that there are lots of sub niches on your niche, You may come up with lots of keywords.

For example your niche is “Camera Lenses“.

Then here it itself with another keyword is a keyword. Like:

Best portrait camera lenses or best portrait lens

Best wide-angle camera lenses or best wide-angle lens

Best telescopic camera lenses or best telescopic lens

Best macro camera lenses or best macro lens

So these can be some of the most popular keywords in your niche if you are having a niche – Camera Lenses or Lens

There is no need to worry too much about keyword competition. You just need to make sure that your keyword should be buyer-intent keyword.

Because you are going to rank for that as you are doing affiliate marketing.

#3. Creating Silo Content on WordPress

This is the main thing in Silo Structure.

The main thing is that you should make the silo content in WordPress Pages.

The reason behind creating Silo content in Pages is that Pages would not be buried inside your blog archives and should be timeless.

The Content you are going to create on the following topics should be reliable and need to be evergreen. So that you don’t have to update it time to time.

Note: Make sure the Silo Content you are creating should be conversing and must be at least 5000-8000 words long. This word limit is not determined by anyone that you should do the same but I personally prefer that.

You should use your own images with the suitable attribute and your focus keyword should be there too. Make use or LSI Keywords to give a boost to your SEO.

LSI. Sounds like a new term? Keep on rolling. Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) is a part of the Google algorithm. Knowing about it and implementing it as a part of your SEO strategy is crucial.

You should also make the sight of your competitors’ posts. Your words should be also depending on there. If the 1st one on the SERPs is having an 8000 words article then you must have to write 10,000 words or maybe more words article to beat your opponent.

Remember you are making a WordPress Page not an Post.

So, you should keep in mind that you have to create a Table of Content and FAQ section to get featured on Google Knowledge Graph.

#4. Supportive Blogs

Now when you have created the Silo Page. Another task left for you and that was literally important.

So now you have to create supportive blogs for your Silo Page or you can say Silo content.

So keep reading.

Stop writing the post that is not fitting in your Silo

Only try to create the content that was relevant for the Silo you created earlier. Because we are going to interlink all the supportive post in the Silo. So that it’s relevancy can be boost up.

As we took an example of best portrait lens.

Now let’s move further to its detailed keywords. For example:

♦ How to use a portrait lens

♦ Best portrait lens for nikon

♦ Things to know before buying portrait lens

The above are the some of the keywords for your Silo on Best Portrait lens.

You need to create at least 3 blog posts that are relevant to the main silo keyword. Like this create some supportive articles for every silo page you’ve created.

Make sure that all the supportive blog posts are linked to the respective silo pages.

#5. Silo interlinking strategy

This is the main Part that makes the Content Silo Structure. Here I am going to clear the doubts about Internal Linking.

We are going to make sure of two things that affect the whole silo structure.

  1. Grouping: Putting the content in relevant categories, and group/cluster the relevant content tightly together through internal linking.
  2. Isolation: In this process we make sure that we are not linking the irrelevant content to the Silo as if we did this, we may lead to a huge loss of relevancy juice.

Now understand this

Supportive posts (children)

  • All the supportive blog posts that you created should link back to the parent silo pages (preferably in the first paragraph of the child posts). This is where you pass maximum link juice to the silo content and rank for huge keywords. You can be aggressive in terms of using the anchors in the internal links, for which your silo content should rank for.
  • Supportive blog posts can link within each other i.e one blog post can link to another one in the same silo hierarchy.
  • You should not link from child supportive posts to other silo parent pages of different silos. It breaks the circle of relevance and leaks link juice.
  • You should not link to the child posts of other silos. Keep the linking between the posts of the same silo.

Silo pages (parents)

  • The silo page should link to all the children of theirs in the same silo (preferably in the middle or bottom of the posts).
  • The main silo page can sometimes link to other silo pages. So that the relevancy of the website boosts.

  • Homepage should have links to all the silo pages (maybe in sidebar or you can give link in the Menus).

As you can see, the homepage (highest authority), multiple blog posts are linking to the silo content you want to rank.

The main motive of doing this is that you need to rank your Silos for the desired keywords or the keywords that you are never thought of by just making a way to pass Link Juice through Silo.

From now stop creating Posts that are irrelevant for your Silo.

#Tips to make Interlinking Process Easier

1. Related posts plugin: You need to have a good plugin that displays only the related posts under the same category. Your theme may support this functionality built-in, or else you can make use of any related posts plugins like this one.

2. Display category/silo specific widgets: As I’ve said above, you need to link to all the posts in the parent silo page.

However, it may be difficult at times to include the inline internal links by coming up with a context. For this, you can use plugins like Custom Sidebars or Content Aware Sidebars.

3. Breadcrumbs: This feature is coming in-built in most of the popular themes nowadays. However, you can make use of plugins like Breadcrumb NavXT.

Breadcrumbs are crucial to link to the silo page from every child post under it. This also helps Google determine the structure of your site.

4. Internal linking plugins: As you’ll be internally linking the relevant blog posts within each other, you can make some internal liking plugins to make your job easier.

There are many smart internal liking plugins. I don’t recommend them as they use the exact same anchor text for all the internal links.

To keep it diverse you need to make sure that the internal linking is done manually with the help of plugins like Mentionable.

When we should use Silo Structure

If you are reading till now then you maybe aware of How much Silo is Important for every website.

Silo can be created every time when you create or update your website. It will definitely boost up your SEO.

By the way there are some time when you should use Silo on your website:

  • If you are just starting a website.
  • Having a low or no organic traffic to your website.
  • If you are already having a website with low post.
  • If you want to rank some specific page of your website( in case it is a Pillar content or Silo Content).
  • Your site is not organised but having a lot of content.

I highly recommend you to use Silo Structure whenever you create a new site because it will be too hard and much time consuming with a lot of content.

How to Implement Silo on Existing Website

There are some steps for you if you want to implement Silo on an Existing Website.

So let’s get started:

  1. Come up with sub-niches for your niche (consider topics for which your blog is already ranking for), by looking at the categories on your site.
  2. Make sure that your every blog post is filed under one and only one category. Every category should have at least 3 blog posts in them, otherwise, don’t create a category.
  3. Delete the redundant and unwanted categories, or no-index them. If you want to have 3 silos on your site, then keep 3 categories under the same name/slug.
  4. Create silo content (in-depth content) on a WordPress page. It should target a specific keyword (maybe of high competition).
  5. Now in the silo pages, include internal links to all the posts under it.
  6. Add the links to the main silo pages you created on the homepage via navigation or sidebar.
  7. Make sure that the internal links to irrelevant posts are removed. The proper grouping and isolation should be in place.

Their are still some post left which you can find that they are not able to be fitted on any Silo. So first I suggest you to modify that post so that it can be fitted on any Silo. If this works then good otherwise leave that as it is.

As you have included the Silo in your website for first time It can decrease some of the traffic but don’t worry. It will be going to create a good impact after all.

How many Silos per Website?

It entirely depends upon your content strategy and how much content you already got( if you are having a website already created).

If you are starting out from a focused niche in a brandable domain name, only one or two silos is enough. As you spread your legs to other niches in the future, you can always add new silos.

For example, if your site is (example), and starting out with only Cutters initially, then have only one or two silos initially i.e. of cutters. Add other silos as you spread legs to exercise bikes, ellipticals, etc.

If you have a site like (example), then have multiple silos upfront like best cutters, cheap cutters, foldable cutters, etc. Then have children posts like best cutters under $50, best portable cutters, etc.

If you are starting out with a multi-niche broad site like WireCutter (which I won’t recommend if you don’t have a high budget), then multiple silos from the inception of the site are ideal.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for, please get in touch through the comment section.

How many silos per site?

It entirely depends upon how large your site is. If you are running an authority site where you target a single niche initially and looking to expand your reaches in the near future, then starting with one silo is enough.

I suggest you start with only 3-4 silos initially. After a few dozens of posts are published on your site, then you can think of creating new silos. Make sure that the silo pages are very in-depth.

To which pages should I build backlinks?

You need to build the majority of backlinks, say, 80% of the backlinks to the silo pages.

As you’ll be linking to the posts down from the silo pages, the link juice will flow throughout the entire silo structure within the topic. While building backlinks make sure the proper silo interlinking is in place.

Can I view the silo structure of my competitors?

Here’s the fact.

Almost 80% of the sites don’t follow the silo structure.

If you’re sure about a site using a silo structure, take a look at their sitemap i.e. at

By looking at their site map, or just navigating their site for some sometimes you can easily determine whether they use silo structure or not.

How I need to target keywords in silo pages?

You need to target keywords in every content you create.

As you’ll be building the majority of the backlinks to the silo pages, and further flows down the children’s pages, targeting a high volume keyword is very essential for silo pages.

As we get to know why it should be created. We also now know the importance of the Silo Structure. As now Google is now less worried about Keywords density, it is more aware of good quality and relevant content. Some may think that the content length affects SEO. This can be a myth or maybe true but let’s now head to the decision for Silo Structure.

If you are going to create a new website I will suggest you create a reminder on your smartphone or on the calendar. You should mark the days of every silo so that it won’t take you long to create one.

Then according to the schedule, start creating the main silo pages and the supportive posts. Interlink cleverly so that the relevant content are grouped together, uplifting each other for higher rankings.

When Google Crawler lands on the silo page, it should only come across the relevant content. By this, your blog or site gains topical trust.
