How Do I Choose a Blog Niche? (In 2021, the correct method) – Niche Selection

By-Naman Agarwal

August 11, 2021

This is, without a doubt, the most essential essay you will ever read before starting a blog. The understanding of your blog niche will determine your future success, or the absence thereof may fail.

Many people began a blog and then abandoned it before they could get the fame they deserved.

What I find most intriguing about this is that the majority of them echoed the same voice:

  • Left because I was unable to increase blog visitors.
  • Stopped because I couldn’t earn money.
  • I was unsuccessful.
  • I was unlucky.

It’s disappointing to hear this since I know the problem isn’t the hard work of these quitters, but rather a lack of knowledge of lucrative blogging, and particularly a lack of understanding of blog niche.

Now, I’m going to reveal the secrets of niche selection, which will serve as your basis for building a successful blogging company.

This is a lengthy read, and you should save it for future reference. Close every distraction and get a cup of coffee or green tea.

If you read every word to learn something new, you will not only discover success with your next blog, but you will also avoid making niche selection errors, which cause many bloggers to fail.

What is a Niche?

Let’s start with the fundamentals before we go into how to identify your blogging niche.

If you’re brand new to blogging, chances are you have no idea what a niche is.

Simply defined, it is a highly specialized segment of a submarket that responds to unique consumers with specific requirements.

The dictionary defines

Denoting or relating to products, services, or interests that appeal to a small, specialized section of the population.

The most popular method to consider a blog niche is as follows:

  • What is the focus of your blog?
  • What is the theme of your blog?

Advantages of Niche Selection

Traffic Growth:

By blogging on a certain niche, you may attract a targeted audience that is more likely to return. It’s best not to disappoint them by discussing irrelevant things.

Because you will be using statistics to select a topic, the likelihood of you creating a high-traffic blog is increased. Furthermore, because you are working in a certain area, you are more likely to be rewarded by Google in terms of organic traffic.

Continous Audience:

Being in the appropriate niche also allows you to attract people who share your interests. Because your blog will only cover one subject. Then the audience will love your content as you will write detailed articles.
You will notice a lower bounce rate, a higher average page load time, and an expansion of your community. This whole process may be sluggish at first, but one day everything will simply shift.

Improved Monetization:

Defining a niche entails getting to know your target market. Understanding your target audience enables you to market goods and services that will benefit them.

Marketing Is Getting Easier:

This argument alone should drive you to devote considerable effort to identify a niche. When you have a targeted blog, marketing becomes simpler than when you have an unfocused blog, and you will notice greater results with fewer efforts.

Enhance your search engine exposure:

At some point throughout your blogging career, you will need to understand and use SEO or Search Engine Optimization techniques, Lengthy Contents. Concentrating on a particular niche and providing relevant material continuously is one such technique.

You May Become an Expert:

Studying is a lengthy process, but if you devote consistent time each day to learning about one subject, you will ultimately rank in the top 1% – 5% of experts in that profession. The best thing is that you will never understand how you acquired such information, as your need for knowledge will never cease. This distinction is especially noticeable to others or you when you compare your latest works to your earlier ones.

What is the most common mistake in niche selection?

When it comes to niche selection, there are a few common errors that many newcomers make. Allow me to record a couple of them.

Possibilities for monetization are lesser:

Many new bloggers begin by focusing solely on AdSense. This is mostly due to a lack of knowledge, but this should not be the sole criterion for selecting successful niches.

You need to broaden your horizons and concentrate on a niche that offers greater revenue options.

There are many ways of monetization some of them can be:

  • Direct advertisers
  • Affiliate programs
  • Online courses
  • Merchandising

Choosing the Wrong Niche:

“It’s okay, I’ll make it a success,” such a mindset frequently leads to dissatisfaction shortly, and eventually leads to you quitting working on your site.

When you realize you’re working in the incorrect niche, you often have the option of starting a new website (in a different niche) and making it work for you. In reality, your second blog may be a success since you will be transferring your expertise from the previous one to the current one.

In my 3 years as a blogger, each new blog has been a bigger success than the previous one. So, if you realize your previous niche is too saturated or you no longer have an interest in it, don’t be scared to leave it and start a new one.

Take all of this advice with a grain of salt and think about it before choosing to change your niche.

Choosing a Generic Niche:

A generic niche is a wide niche with strong competition that is also extremely broad. For example, a health niche, a technology niche, or a fashion niche.

A better approach to investigate it is to concentrate on a specialized small niche inside a wide niche.
This alone will guarantee the success of your site in terms of popularity, traffic, and money.

Furthermore, since you will be spending a lot of time studying, learning, and writing about one certain subject, you will become a specialized expert.

Failure occurs in the absence of research:

If you want to create a long-term business (income stream) from your blogging efforts, you must invest time studying and analyzing data to choose a niche.

This may take up to 2-3 days before you can start your blog. However, just doing this exercise can help you verify your concept, and your choice will not be entirely dependent on enthusiasm and gut emotions.

On the other, having a gut feeling isn’t always a negative thing, as long as you’ve been well-nourished with the appropriate knowledge before starting your blog.

Not Beginning Due to a Niche Deficit:

While selecting a niche is undoubtedly the first step toward lucrative blogging success, you should not remain there for an extended period of time. There are many more obstacles ahead, and you should finish the whole niche selection procedure within a week.

Even if this means you’ve chosen the incorrect niche, you may always change your mind later. The critical point here is to avoid being bogged down in the process of niche selection.

How to Pickup Niche for your Blog?

Low Competition Means Ease of Winning:

Another thing to consider before settling on a niche is competition. You should avoid highly competitive niches since they are already saturated with websites created by other webmasters.

This is the most critical principle for effective niche selection. Your objective should be to choose a niche that is not too competitive and has a low volume of users. Simultaneously, it has the ability to expand over time (see trends in niche selection) to provide a more complete picture of this.

Future Relevance of the Subject:

By monitoring the trend and verifying that it has grown over time, you can guarantee that you will remain relevant in the future.
There are certain exceptions, such as when you’re working on a micro-niche and your blog’s time horizon is less than 1-2 years. Google trends is an excellent free tool for determining a topic’s popularity.

This is how to use Google trends.

  • Navigate to Google Trends.
  • Enter your specialized subject.
  • Choose a destination country (Ex: Worldwide, India, United States, Australia)
  • Select a time period (for example, five years) and Google will show you how user interest has grown or dropped in relation to that subject.

And Google would show you how user interest in that subject has grown or diminished over time.

Your area of Interest, a.k.a. passion:

Choose a niche based on your prior experience, hobbies and learnings, current interests, readings and learnings, and life accomplishments. For instance, if you’ve lost weight, you could consider establishing a health blog; if you’ve achieved financial independence, you might consider creating a finance blog.
Always keep in mind that teaching improves learning!

I do this by compiling a list of topics I am enthusiastic about and then running it through the additional filters mentioned below.

This guarantees that the niche you choose is both meaningful to you and lucrative in the long term.

Your Field of Specialty:

While enthusiasm is one compass for finding a fantastic focus, you should not overlook your current skills when selecting a Niche. Particularly, since a large number of websites depend on Google search to generate traffic, knowledge is a factor to consider.

Google made it clear a few years ago that they consider author expertise when ranking a website. A high ranking indicates that you will be rewarded with increased organic traffic, which will aid you in your blogging endeavors.

Indeed, Google went this a step further and began de-ranking websites with ambiguous competence, particularly in specific areas such as health, banking, and everything related to money.

While generic areas such as fashion and technology are doing well at the moment, we cannot be confident that this will continue shortly. When selecting a niche, it is important to examine your credentials, your formal title (for example, engineer, doctor, or management degree).

If you lack one of them, avoid entering a niche where certification is required. There is a solution for this issue, although it is not quite as simple as it seems. Therefore, in addition to your interest, select a niche in which you may showcase your own skills. You can employ professional authors. A solution for this is to get your material reviewed by an expert (For example, health niche can work with a medical practitioner, to review the content).

Is Your Niche Economically Viable?

This is another critical factor to consider when choosing a niche for your profitable blog. It’s very unusual for new bloggers to start a blog on a subject they’re passionate about yet struggle to monetize.

The reason for this is that numerous high-traffic niches are difficult to monetize. This is because there are insufficient marketers are willing to promote in such areas.

While Google AdSense or Media.net is undoubtedly the most common method of monetizing in any niche.

There are many methods for determining the monetization potential of a website, one of which is by evaluating comparable websites in that area. This approach is often referred to as competitive analysis.

Analyze other blogs on a related topic (wide or limited) and see how they monetize their content.

A few points to keep in mind:

  • Are they monetizing exclusively through contextual ad networks such as AdSense?
  • They can be conducting any direct marketing campaigns? If yes, which brands are you referring to?
  • Is the website equipped with affiliate links?
  • Are they selling anything (courses, eBooks, or merchandising)?
  • Maybe they are consulting?

This kind of research will give you a leg up and also serve as an idea for your blog business strategy.
